2.26.2010- Very cold!

February 28th, 2010 No comments

Believe it or not, the water lines in the bus almost froze up last night- got down to 25, now about 29. Woke up at 6:30- too warm. The roof-top heat pump had stopped working (too cold) and the gas furnace had taken over. Got up to brush teeth and no water. A little panicked but went to check it all out. Could not turn outside water faucet easily, frozen? Took my little cube heater and put it in the water bay and plugged it in. Then turned on the water pump… worked so not frozen. Ran water through all the lines. Went back to outside faucet and removed the hose, brought it in to thaw. Finally able to turn faucet on and it ran fine. I think I just missed having a big problem!

It warmed up enough for some time at the pool to get some sun. Did not swim… the wind made it very cold when wet- don’t need that!

Played petanque at 10. Down 12-2 and our team came back to win 13-12. Amazing and lots of fun. Had a “Happy Hour Jam” at 4pm… two fellows on guitar sang for the crowd. Enjoyable day.

A cold day again… did the laundry and sat by the pool after it warmed up a bit. Nothing exciting going on… just relaxing.

2.23.2010- A day in the sun…

February 24th, 2010 1 comment

Decided that I am in no rush to get back into cold weather. Went to the office and paid to extend my stay here for another week, to March 5th. My original date to get back home has been March 20th so this leaves about two weeks for the return trip. If, however, it does not look like things are warming up to the north, I may extend even longer and make the trip home a quick one, minimizing the site-seeing. Who knows? Will figure it out day by day!

A beautiful day led me to the pool- there from about 10 to 4. Then back to Scooter, an early dinner (second meal of ribs from the previous night’s “two-fer”), finally worked on taxes and read.

2.22.2010- Petanque before the rain comes…

February 24th, 2010 No comments

Slept in (8:15) because the dominoes went fairly late for an old guy like me. Went to petanque at 10 and was on the losing side in both games. Bob, Richard, Bob and Jean were also there, along with Sue, Ellen, Margo, Al and some others whose names I did not get. A great social game but would feel better if I could throw a better ball!

Back to Scooter by noon for a little work on the blogging then off to the pool… rain not here yet.

Back to Scooter… Bob invited me to join he and Richard, with Jack and Eva, to go to Sioux City Steakhouse for dinner, leaving at 4:30. Eva is the social secretary so we had no problem getting quick seating and had wonderful service. Seems that this group goes here for meals quite often and they seemed to know everyone who works at the restaurant.

Jack and Eva-                                             Bob and Richard-

The best part of the experience was the food… absolutely the best ribs ever and an unbelievable price. Two full meals for $15.99 (took one home for tomorrow). I added a dozen grilled shrimp for $3.50. See the specials sheet below. If it were not about a half-hour away, I’d eat dinner there every day!

2.21.2010- Mexican Train Dominos

February 24th, 2010 No comments

Spent the cooler morning hours going out to Walmart for a lounge cushion, to Staples for computer paper, and Publix for sustenance. Came back and went to the pool for the afternoon.

While at the pool, I was invited by Bob an Richard to come over after dinner and learn how to play Mexican Train Dominoes We were joined by Bob and Jean and Jack and Eva. Being the odd man and newbie I sat out and watched. Fun game… if you are in to dominos or want to find a new game, the instructions are at the following website: http://www.pagat.com/tile/wdom/mextrain.html.

2.20.2010- Homosassa Springs State Park

February 22nd, 2010 1 comment

Based on a recommendation by John Faunce, I spent several hours at the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. Originally a private zoo, it became a state park some years ago. It is very impressive and I understand that it has more volunteers than any other park in the state, over 300.

This park is different than any other I have seen… it is located at the headwaters of the Homosassa River, north of Tampa. The water is part of the spring-fed river, not man made as in an aquarium. The animals are caged but in as natural a way as possible.

Read about Lu, the “odd-ball” member of the park.

2.15-19.2010- Same old cold days, Olympics, off to Hudson…

February 22nd, 2010 No comments

Not much to report… the headline says it all.

One point to note… arrived at Gulf Coast Resort in Hudson (only about 35 miles from Lake Como) on Friday the 19th and had a completely different feeling. Within 10 minutes I was greeted by three different people (Dick and Wendell), one even coming back to introduce his wife to me (Herman and Sophia). With the possible exceptions of Sunsport Gardens and Edun Lake (smaller parks), no RV park has been so receptive and friendly. Taking a bike ride around the property brought me into contact with Bill… when I thought I could not get the Olympics (it turns out that I can) he even offered to let me watch them with him at his place. Amazing and a very nice feeling!

2.14.2010- Happy Valentine’s Day to all!

February 15th, 2010 No comments

Talked to Rob to wish him a happy Valentine’s Day and then decided to satisfy my aquarium needs by going to the Florida Aquarium, in Tampa, today. Something about the water and the beasts that inhabit it that I find very serene and beautiful. I love to think about all the times I have been boating… an aquarium demonstrates all that has been going on right under me!

Today, nothing but pictures…

2.13.2010- Taking care of business and relaxing…

February 15th, 2010 No comments

Spent some more time on taxes, the tenants in Media, and reading. Also spent a bunch of time watching the Olympics. Still too chilly for the pool or hot tub but very cold when you get out. So, all in all, a very slow day….
