3.6.2010- Petanque Tourney

March 11th, 2010 No comments

When I realized that I was going to stay longer, I bravely signed up for the annual petanque tournament here at Gulf Coast Resort. through a random selection, I was partnered with Bob, from Gulf Coast, and Carolyn, from Paradise Lakes. It was double elimination, that is if you lose twice you are out. We won our first match and then had to wait quite a while… it seems that the losers play first to reduce the ranks. We then went on to lose the second, win the third (the theme from “Chariots of Fire” kept playing in my head), and then lost the fourth. Drats, we had been doing fairly well! ;-(  In any case, we came in 6th out of 23 teams. I guess the placing for #5 back depends on how long you last on the court, the first four being determined by the semi-final two matches and the final match. In any case, we dun good!!!

3.5.2010- A Decision and Chili’s.

March 10th, 2010 No comments

Another very cold morning. Up very early and found water slow at the tap. Brought the hose inside, then opened outdoor spigot and icy slush emerged. Turned water pump on in Scooter and ran water through the lines. All is OK.

                                                  Are we having fun yet?

Did the wash in the AM, then to the pool. Thought a lot about my plans… this was supposed to be a trip of discovery- did I do enough? Am feeling very happy here and don’t want to risk a cold trip north. The fact that I am  happy here has led to the decision to stay until the 19th (two more weeks) and then head straight home… no more sight-seeing this trip (leaves some for the next trip.

While at the pool, Jerry and Barb Parsons asked me to join them for dinner at the local Chili’s.  A great time spent with very nice people.

3.4.2010- MOSI and Souix City Steakhouse, again…

March 10th, 2010 No comments

Went to petanque at 10am and did OK. Got talking with Bob about my wanting to go to MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry) at some point. Agreed that today was the day. We met at noon and off we went. The attraction was a display of DaVinci’s inventions (All reproductions, obviously) as described in his drawings and writings. It took about an hour to get there… well worth the drive… it was fascinating.

After MOSI, Bob and I met Richard at Sioux City Steakhouse and I again had a two-fer, this time a sirloin.

3.3.2010- Another day…

March 7th, 2010 1 comment

Another cold morning. Played petanque and went to the pool. While there I came up with my plan for the rest of this winter get-away. I have decided to spend two more weeks at Gulf Coast Resort and, on March 19th, start directly home. This has probably been my most favorite nudist park… the people here have been exceptionally welcoming and friendly. I have really enjoyed the petanque, so much so that after making my decision to stay, I signed up for the annual petanque tournament to be held on Saturday, the 6th. My only real concern in staying was that I would love to change the site for Scooter. I have not been able to level the bus (the hydraulic system is still not working, hasn’t from day one) and I have had to use my neighbor’s waste pipe to dispose of “all things bad”, an inconvenience for him. So, when Susan, the owner, is back in town, we will hopefully hash out the details of my staying. Will also probably book some time for next year.

2.28-3.2.2010- Nothing unusual…

March 2nd, 2010 No comments

2/28-3/1- Nothing unusual either day. Played petanque and did fairly well. To the pool with a good book in the afternoon on both days.

3/2- Matt Hammer, my investment guru just back from vacation, called this AM. Much discussion about a ridiculous questionnaire demanded by the regulatory authorities concerning his management of my account. A very spirited discussion, indeed… so much so that I completely forgot about petanque. Conversation over, I went off campus to get some meds and stock up on groceries. Supposed to rain but the sun has been out a fair amount. Watched the rest of Band of Brothers after it clouded over.

Am really getting itchy to get home. Four plus months away is enough. Am planning to start north when it appears that spring in making inroads on the way north. Will probably stay here at Gulf Coast Resort and then come home as directly and conveniently as possible. March 20th is still the anticipated arrival date in Avalon. I just hope that spring has sprung by then!

2.27.2010- Band of Brothers and a party, etc…

March 2nd, 2010 No comments

Spent the morning watching the first six episodes of the HBO series Band of Brothers, a tale about a company of soldiers during the European theater of World War II. Incredible bravery.

Afternoon was the usual… at the pool. Actually have a pretty good tan! I was invited to a party at Bob and Richard’s new digs at 4pm (they were forced to move due to a prior reservation of their original place). Fun time- about a dozen showed up. I am slowly getting to know the long-time seasonal visitors of the park.

2.26.2010- Very cold!

February 28th, 2010 No comments

Believe it or not, the water lines in the bus almost froze up last night- got down to 25, now about 29. Woke up at 6:30- too warm. The roof-top heat pump had stopped working (too cold) and the gas furnace had taken over. Got up to brush teeth and no water. A little panicked but went to check it all out. Could not turn outside water faucet easily, frozen? Took my little cube heater and put it in the water bay and plugged it in. Then turned on the water pump… worked so not frozen. Ran water through all the lines. Went back to outside faucet and removed the hose, brought it in to thaw. Finally able to turn faucet on and it ran fine. I think I just missed having a big problem!

It warmed up enough for some time at the pool to get some sun. Did not swim… the wind made it very cold when wet- don’t need that!

2.25.2010- Victorious!

Played petanque at 10. Down 12-2 and our team came back to win 13-12. Amazing and lots of fun. Had a “Happy Hour Jam” at 4pm… two fellows on guitar sang for the crowd. Enjoyable day.

A cold day again… did the laundry and sat by the pool after it warmed up a bit. Nothing exciting going on… just relaxing.

2.23.2010- A day in the sun…

February 24th, 2010 1 comment

Decided that I am in no rush to get back into cold weather. Went to the office and paid to extend my stay here for another week, to March 5th. My original date to get back home has been March 20th so this leaves about two weeks for the return trip. If, however, it does not look like things are warming up to the north, I may extend even longer and make the trip home a quick one, minimizing the site-seeing. Who knows? Will figure it out day by day!

A beautiful day led me to the pool- there from about 10 to 4. Then back to Scooter, an early dinner (second meal of ribs from the previous night’s “two-fer”), finally worked on taxes and read.
